has diversified over the years to become experts in temperature measurement systems and temperature monitoring applications. Historically this goes back to our extensive involvement with the UK’s Nuclear industry and our core activity of strain gauging and strain gauge applications. For Nuclear projects inside the pressure vessel, boiler or steam pipes high temperature >600°C strain gauges are utilized alongside high temperature thermocouples to assess plant performance and give a measure of the duty or predicted working life.
Our other area of temperature measurement is with concrete where we have been involved in the structural health monitoring of concrete for Mega Construction projects including Nuclear Power Stations.
Large mass fill concrete base slabs are often used for structural foundations, during curing of these high volumes of concrete great care must be taken to ensure the mix design is such that the exothermic reaction does not exceed permissible limits across the whole cross-section of the base slab. A series of thermocouples are installed at various depths to ensure strict control the temperature is maintained whilst the concrete is curing.
In Dubai at DUBAL the Aluminium Smelters were recently redesigned, to assess the performance of the new steel smelter structure some 30 no. Kyowa High Temperature Strain Gauges were employed to verify the fabricated steel shell was operating within its design limits. The strain gauges continued to be monitored throughout the early years of operation to confirm the smelters are functioning as predicted over the numerous smelting cycles.
