One of the characteristics of nano-materials is that they have large specific surface areas. On the other hand, analyzing a specific surface area allows us to predict the structures and physical properties of nano-materials.
One of the most popular methods for measuring a specific surface area is the BET method which makes use of the physical phenomena where gas molecules (such as nitrogen) adhere to the surface of a specimen. Absolute values of the specific surface area of a specimen can be calculated based on the measured data. Many measuring systems and equipment using this principle have already been developed, and various models are already on the market. These systems are complete packages which come with fully automatic features, high measuring precision, features to find pore size distributions, a variety of analytical software, and so on. Though they have these great features, these system are expensive, and the measuring process is slow.
