When CNT is doped with nitrogen, the crystalline structure of CNT will change dramatically: the tube-like space will become a beaded-shell-like shape.

The unique shape and crystalline structure result in a unique function: a higher catalyst effect appears when Pt catalysts of fuel cell are supported by the nitrogen-doped CNT instead of carbon-black. This effect is interpreted as the catalyst effect of catalytic nitrogen sites located on the corners of these beaded-shells.
Nitrogen-doped CNT has also a unique mechanical property: it can be easily broken and shortened due to its shell structure. Because CNT without Nitrogen doping usually has a good crystalline structure, it is difficult to be broken or shortened by using normal milling methods. If you want to shorten a long CNTs, nitrogen doping is an effective method.
